Fingal County Council Architects win Conservation Award for project at Newbridge House
Fingal County Council won an award for its architectural work on the Newbridge House Courtyard at this year’s Irish Georgian Society’s Architectural Conservation Awards.
County Architect Fionnuala May accepted the award on behalf of Fingal County Council at the award ceremony in the Irish Architectural Archive building, Merrion Square on Thursday, October 5.

She said: “The project resolved shortcomings in the existing courtyard cobbling which had been become unsightly. In line with best conservation practice the works retained and reused as much original material as possible and the specification and design was faithful to the original. The design and character of the original surface including its pattern has also been maintained as a result.”
Those in attendance at the award ceremony included Fionnuala May; Project Architect Brid Ryan; Clerk of Works Gary Glennon; and Consulting Conservation Engineer Lisa Edden.
The conservation work was completed on site by Francis J Haughey Building Conservation and the courtyard space has been reopened since June 2017.
The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Mary McCamley, welcomed the news: “A huge part of Newbridge House’s appeal to locals and visitors is its beautiful and authentic architecture. I am delighted that the restoration of this site was completed without damaging its historical integrity.”
Fingal County Council Chief Executive, Paul Reid, praised the project team for their efforts: ““Fingal County Council is delighted to be involved in such a successful architectural project. We know how important spaces like Newbridge House and Farm are to Fingal residents and visitors alike and are thrilled that our team has been recognised in this way by the Irish Georgian Society for their careful conservation work on this site.”
The resurfacing is part of a sequence of ongoing projects at Newbridge House and Farm to improve the visitor experience.
Other award winners included the Shelbourne Hotel facade restoration, Dublin 2, Richmond Barracks, Dublin 8 and Fancroft Mill, Co Offaly.
The Irish Georgian Society promotes awareness and the protection of Ireland's architectural heritage and decorative arts. The awards are open to professionals involved in the conservation of historic buildings in Ireland and received entries from across the country.
