Rev Trevor Sargent welcomed to Ecumenical Christian Unity Service is Balscdden.

Recently ordained Rev Trevor Sargent was invited to preach last weekend at Balscadden Church. All Christians from Balbriggan were invited to join together for an ECUMENICAL CHRISTIAN UNITY PRAYER SERVICE. That took place in the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption in Balscadden as part of the 200 years celebrations.

Revd Anthony Kelly, Fr. Brendan Madden P.P, Rev Trevor Sargent, Fr. Donal Toal

The sermon by Rev Sargent was on the theme ‘Justice and justice only you shall pursue’ and as was part of a Week of Prayer for Christian Unity . Rev Sargent who spoke warmly of his time in Balbriggan and in the theme of unity reminded us that when he first came to Balbriggan in the 1980’s and when he was appointed Principal of St. George's National School the school has only 3 staff and with diminished numbers the school was threatened with closure and the possible merger with Holmpatrick National School. It was the local Catholic community that rallied in support of keeping the school open. It was that unity of the two Balbriggan Community’s that saved the school. St Georges School today has over 40 staff and are accommodated in a new facility on the Naul Road.

The event finished off with refreshments at Balscaden Community Centre. Thanks to all involved.

Rev Trevor Sargent, Niall Keady
