WOMEN IN POLITICS CONFERENCE April 28th


The Blanchardstown Europe Direct Information Centre at Blanchardstown Library will host a Women in Politics Conference on Friday, April 28 in the Castleknock Hotel and Country Club. The Deputy Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Eithne Loftus will open the event, the objective of which is to provide an historical and current perspective on the role of women in politics, local, national and international and the challenges they encounter.
This conference will be of great interest to young women and men, students in senior cycle in local schools and also members of the public. Speakers on the day will include Lynn Boylan MEP, Ruth Coppinger TD, Councillor Grainne Maguire, Niamh Gallagher from Women for Election, 17 year old Mary Vrinceanu, a 6th year student, and the actress Eilish O’Carroll whose mother Maureen O’Carroll was Ireland’s first female Labour Party TD in the 1950’s.
This event will run from 10am -1pm and will include a series of presentations and a panel discussion with an opportunity for audience participation. Attendees will learn of the important role played by women in European politics in the past and in the present. They will also gain an understanding of many of the barriers and challenges that have been and remain to be overcome to encourage more participation in European politics by women.
